SNAP Benefits
for Seniors β You May Qualify
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides monthly food assistance to millions of Americans. Seniors 60+ have special rules that make it easier to qualify β but most never apply because they don’t know they’re eligible.
π SNAP Facts for Seniors
Senior SNAP eligibility β the rules that apply to you
Seniors 60+ have different β and more lenient β eligibility rules than the general population. You may qualify even if you own your home, have a car, or receive Social Security.
β Age Requirement
You must be age 60 or older to qualify under senior SNAP rules. Under 60? The general SNAP rules still apply but income and resource limits are stricter.
β Citizenship / Residency
Must be a US citizen or a “qualified non-citizen” (lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, etc.). Must live in the state where applying. Each state has its own SNAP office.
β Income & Resources
Gross monthly income must be at or below 130% of the federal poverty level. Net income (after deductions) must be at or below 100%. Seniors on SSI automatically qualify in most states.
β What does NOT disqualify you as a senior:
β Having one vehicle (exempt)
β Receiving Social Security
β Having a pension
β Receiving survivor benefits
β Life insurance cash value
β Burial funds up to $1,500
β SSI recipients: In most states, if you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you automatically qualify for SNAP and may be enrolled without a separate application. Contact your local SNAP office to confirm.
2026 SNAP income and resource limits for seniors
Seniors 60+ only need to meet the NET income test (after deductions) β the gross income test does not apply. This is a major advantage over general SNAP eligibility.
| Household Size | Gross Monthly Income (130% FPL) | Net Monthly Income (100% FPL) | Annual Gross Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | $1,580/month | $1,215/month | $18,954/year |
| 2 people | $2,137/month | $1,644/month | $25,636/year |
| 3 people | $2,694/month | $2,072/month | $32,318/year |
| 4 people | $3,250/month | $2,500/month | $39,000/year |

How much SNAP will you receive?
Your monthly SNAP benefit is calculated based on your household size and net income. The maximum benefit amounts for 2026 are:
π How your benefit is calculated: The government assumes you’ll spend 30% of your net income on food. Your SNAP benefit = maximum benefit β 30% of your net income. Example: 1 person with $800 net income β $292 β ($800 Γ 30%) = $292 β $240 = $52/month. But with medical expense deductions, many seniors pay much less net income and receive higher benefits.
